"Pete Rose Play Hungry" A Book Review by John Marsinelli

Growing up a baseball fan my father and I would at times talk about Pete Rose and how he believes he was one of the best and that he got screwed. While reading this book I found two similarities that
stuck out to me. Pete Rose admired his dad and I feel even though me and my father have our
differences, at the end of the day he is my best friend. The second similarity was that he had an uncle
Bud as well. I really got inspired by reading about how Mr. Rose worked his butt off to accomplish all
the success he did.
He mentions that he wasn’t even the best baseball player at his high school. This just shows hard work and dedication to a craft from not the best player on your high school team to the all time hit king. I really respect how Mr. Rose played going 100% every single time. I also respect how Mr. Rose admits to the gambling scandal. I still believe he should be elected into the HOF and that players have
definitely done way worse and are still in the HOF. Some things I learned from this book that I had no
idea about was that Pete Rose was in the military, he was Morganna first athlete kiss, that he spent some
time playing for the Montreal Expos and that he was a player manager for the Reds. I also didn’t realize how Mr. Rose played so many positions. He always said that he did whatever his team thought was best to win so if that meant to switch from one position to another then it would be done. He would practice his butt off for every position he played. He was truly a lead by example kind of guy. If he is going to go 100% day after day then you would hope that would rub off on his teammates. I am happy that Mr. Rose did get to win Rookie of the Year with his dad still alive. I wish his father was alive to see him break the hit record.  I thought it was really cool that Mr. Rose played for his hometown team. It was interesting learning about how Mr. Rose followed his father around all the time in his youth. He was either the water boy or the bat boy depending on the season. It was really nice to see how Mr. Rose spoke about his father. His father taught him to always play hard and to do what he can to help his team win. This book is a prime example of how hard work and dedication can take you as far as you want it to take you.  I recommend this book to not only athletes but anyone who is driven for success.

Sports book reviews by John Marsinelli

Hello all, I would like to introduce to you all a very good friend of mine.

John Marsinelli is a coworker, friend and a sports-a-holic such as myself. He is into reading and reviewing sports books. I've known John for a little while now and he continually tells me about the books he has read. So when I decided to reopen this, I figured I would ask him to join so that he can put his reviews out to the masses.

A little known fact about John is that he is a great kid, he constantly is doing things for charity, and is also training to run in the Christie Clinic marathon (which was cancelled this year due to the coronavirus).
John has aspirations to be a police officer and LOVES White Claws!

Lets all give John a warm welcome and I hope you all enjoy his reviews.

Thank you

What now?

As I mentioned in my last post, there is no NBA, MLB, NFL, or NHL. So what is there to do for a sports lover such as myself?
Well, I am constantly seeing that both the NBA and NHL are trying to find common areas where all teams can play, which might make the games play into the late dog days of summer forcing them to make the start of next season later into the year. I for one would welcome the NHL to be playing into the late into the summer, because the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs have to be one of the most exciting playoffs out there. It seems that its the only sport in which a 7th seed team can get hot at the right time and take it all the way to a championship. For me that is the most exciting thing that the NHL provides.

The NFL is stating that they aren't going to be changing anything that they do (schedule wise). I have to say that for the first time in a  long time, I actually paid attention the NFL draft this year. It has to be one of the most entertaining drafts I have seen in a long time. Ones I've watched in the past I have fallen asleep on the couch within an hour, that's mainly due to the drawn out process of the picks, introducing and pop and circumstance that comes along with it.
This years draft moved quicker, gave us a glimpse into these soon to be pro bowl athletes world and even the commissioner seemed human and to enjoy it. The commentary was good and it had very little hiccups (well at least not to my knowledge.)

MLB is, well MLB. They haven't done much, the cheating scandal hasn't been talked about for a while, The Red Sox traded Mookie and Price, but what else is there?... Go on, I'll wait.
Exactly, nothing! I have lost so much interest in MLB that I don't have much to talk about. The players salaries are so high, their replay system isn't working too well, and their product just seems long winded and over saturated.

The NBA is trying to get back to business as usual, but are having a hard time getting teams on board and finding specific areas where they can play. They constantly toss back and forth the idea of playing in empty stadiums, but most players aren't on board with that, and honestly... who can blame them? They deserve to play in front of their fans, just as much as the other leagues. I'm not a NBA expert (nor am I an expert at any sports), but they will figure it out and continue on.

As much as I want sports to come back so I can spend my Saturday and Sunday nights with a ice cold beer and being stressed out watching my beloved Bruins, I'd much rather have a vaccine made and for this to stop taking our loved ones away.
Sports is a a healer, sports unites people. Sports allows strangers to have something in common, makes dinner with extended families more enjoyable. But now is the time to follow the restrictions, stay inside when your supposed too. Thank the Dr's, EMT's, Police and Fire associates.Thank a nursing home associate and all health care workers. Thank a dispatcher, a grocery worker, a retail worker. Thank the Dunkin Donuts worker that's there at 5am to make sure you have you medium regular coffee.

Thank you to all.

Quara-What???

It's the year 2020, the world is in the midst of an pandemic. The world is fixing itself, while we are all home stuck inside. The grocery stores are refusing to sell alcohol to the outside states. The Government has acknowledged that aliens might actually exists. But yet we continue, we strive and push forward.

All sports (professional, and collegiate levels) are postponed. Yet we continue, we strive and push forward. In a time where first responders, Dr's, nurses are our heroes, we continue, we strive and push forward. In New England, we have 4 major sport teams that are our lively hood, Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, and of course the New England Patriots. Red Sox have recently won a championship, Celtics are relevant and the Bruins are having one of the best seasons they've had in a while, even better then their Stanley Cup run that ended in a game 7 loss last year. But the biggest sports news to come out of  New England is the departure of one of the greatest QB's of all time. That's right, if you've been living under a rock for the past couple of months, the Golden Boy Tom Brady has left the New England Patriots via Free Agency to a VERY unlikely team in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Tom Brady, a 6 time Super Bowl champ, All time win, passing and MVP leader in Patriots history has left for the Tamp Bay Buccaneers. I have tried to comprehend what has happened, and all I can say is thank you. Thank you for all you've done Tom Brady, thank you for all the ups and downs. Thank you for all the championships. Thank you for hard work and dedication you've shown in your time here. Thank you for showing New England what it takes to be a winner. You've put it all out there and walked away a champion. You've earned the right to get paid as a elite QB, to have another team entrust in your abilities. Do I wish you ended your career in New England? absolutely, but not everything has a fairy tail ending. I am not salty, I am not resentful, and I don't hate you or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I am not upset at Bill Belicheck, or Robert Kraft for allowing you to leave.

If anything, it has rejuvenated my faith in the New England Patriots and put the unknown in me. Unknown on how the Patriots will play, the unknown of who the starting QB will be, if BB will prove that he can build a winning team with a bunch of players that went undrafted (again).
I will always be a Tom Brady fan, mainly for what hes done for the organization, I will also be following the Bucs, so I can see how well, or unwell they're doing with our QB.

For the sake of things, I'm not going to touch upon the Rob Gronkowski coming out of retirement to join Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. It's exactly what I would have expected in the year 2020 thus far.

Thank you for reading, I hope to have more posts coming soon.

Mr. Patriot Retires

Gino Cappelleti, one of the faces of the New England Patriots’ organization, has retired as of today.  Capelletti has been a member of the organization for 45 of its 52 years in existence!  From 1960-1970, he was a kicker and a wide receiver for the AFL with the Boston Patriots.  In 1964 he won the AFL’s MVP award.  He is a member of the New England Patriots Hall of Fame, their All-1960s Team and the American League Hall of Fame.  He is the All-Time Points leader in AFL history.  In other words, the dude has had an illustrious career with the Patriots organization.  After his football career was over, it did not take long for him to join the organization as a color commentator for the Patriots Radio Network.  He was a broadcaster for 33 years.

He’s been with the Pats for 45 out of the organizations 52 years.  He’s been one of the faces of the organization for so long! That is just incredible to me, to devote yourself to a single organization and area for such a substantial amount of time.  I also love him because in 1984 he was inducted into the National Italian Sports Hall of Fame.  L’Italia!  Anyways, while it’s sad to see him leave the Pats it’s just that time for him.  Cappelletti told the Boston Herald: “It’s been 33 long years with the Patriots — not that they weren’t exciting and good years — but the length of time certainly has been part of that. Of course, I’ve got to believe that this was the time to do it, and I had a great experience with all of it. I look forward to many fond memories because of what we saw with the Patriots throughout the years with how they’ve improved in almost every category. They’re one of the elite teams in the National Football League at this point, and I’m just proud and honored to have been part of it.”

We wish you all the best, Mr. Patriot.  Thank you for your unwavering dedication to Boston sports!

Ross is Boss Nation

I know I haven't talked much about the Red Sox this year, but last night I watched a team come together like no other. Let's all take quick moment to watch this mammoth walk off blast by Cody Ross.
(click below to see the HR in real time)
Cody Ross's Blast

Not to be out done Clay Bucholz had a very solid game going 8 innings, giving up 6 hits, one earned and striking out 6.
Watch out people the Red Sox might have woken up.

Thoughts and Prayers out to the Victims in Aurora

By now I'm sure you've all heard of the Colorado massacre that occurred last night at a midnight Dark Knight Rises premiere. Unfortunately, there are horrible people who do horrible things every day. I can't imagine how the friends and families of those affected by this tragedy are feeling right now.

A member of our sports journalism family was also killed in last night's massacre. Jessica Ghawi, an aspiring sports broadcaster, was shot twice last night and killed. She worked for the website 'Busted Coverage'. She was also there for the Toronto mall shooting earlier this summer and had this to say shortly after:

“I say all the time that every moment we have to live our life is a blessing. So often I have found myself taking it for granted. Every hug from a family member. Every laugh we share with friends. Even the times of solitude are all blessings. Every second of every day is a gift. After Saturday evening, I know I truly understand how blessed I am for each second I am given.”

The shooting in Aurora was a national tragedy, but if we could all take a second and read Jessica's words we can take something away from this experience.  Every moment in our life is a blessing.  Make the most out of your life, and aspire to do big things.  I know this isn't really a sports post but sometimes you just need to say what has to be said.  In honor of Jessica, and the other who lost their lives last night in Aurora, Colorado, live your life to the fullest extent.  Take Jessica's words to heart.

Rick Nash, Bobby Ryan Not Headed to B’s

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news (or good news) to some of you Bruins fans, but you shouldn’t be expecting Rick Nash or Bobby Ryan to join the B’s this season.  According to media outlets including ESPN Boston, Peter Chiarelli has told Anaheim and Columbus that David Krejci and Milan Lucic are absolutely unavailable for trade.  In addition to this, 20-year-old star Tyler Seguin and top prospect Dougie Hamilton are ‘untouchable’ for the Bruins.

According to ESPN, the Bruins and Ducks had ‘exploratory talks’ regarding Bobby Ryan, but without throwing Krejci in the mix it is extremely unlikely that any sort of deal will be reached.  There had been speculative talks last season before Krejci signed his contract extension that he might get traded to Anaheim in a package for Ryan.  However, Chiarelli has made it clear that the 25-year-old Czech is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Nash, on the other hand, costs way too much.  The Columbus Blue Jackets’ asking price has been way too high for all of the teams on Nash’s list this offseason.  His list of teams includes the Bruins, Rangers, Flyers, Sharks, Red Wings and Penguins. Columbus has reportedly requested any combination of Krejci, Lucic, Seguin or Hamilton from the Bruins for Nash.  Peter Chiarelli would never let this will never happen.

Seeing as the Flyers are out of the Nash race (they just signed Shea Weber to a 14 year, $100M sheet) and the Bruins are out, that leaves the Sharks, Rangers, Red Wings and Penguins.  The Red Wings and the Rangers both have ample cap space to sign the 5-time all-star, but any trade for Nash will require a costly package.

We’ll see what happens, but we can all say with a high degree of certainty that neither Nash nor Ryan will be in Bruins’ black and gold next season.

P.J. Axelsson Back to NHL?

Former Bruins forward P.J. Axelsson wants back into the NHL.  Axelsson’s agent confirmed to New England media outlets that Axelsson is currently talking with two NHL teams about returning to the NHL.  The 37-year-old Swedish forward was a career Bruin, spending 12 years with the organization before leaving after the 2008-2009 season.  Since then, he has been playing in the Swedish Elite League for his hometown team, Frolunda.

The 6’1”, 190-pound winger was always a reliable depth scorer for the Bruins organization.  Spending most of his time on the third offensive line, Axelsson scored 103 goals and had 184 assists in 797 career games for the B’s.  While Axelsson’s agent did not explicitly confirm that he was engaging in talks with the Bruins, it would not be surprising considering the fact that the Bruins organization was the only NHL organization he has ever been a part of.

Could the Bruins use a player like Axelsson?  Hell yes!  While Axelsson isn’t the grittiest player in the world, he still brings that “Recchi-esque” leadership and grit to the B’s dressing room.  The Bruins have expressed that finding a player to step up as the Mark Recchi from 2010-2012 this season is crucial to the club’s success moving forward.  As we all saw last year, without that presence the Bruins were much less successful and often looked sluggish during the second half of the season.  Axelsson brings grit, attitude and intelligence to the game.  In addition, P.J. would bring good skating and two-way play to the Bruins as well.  And, (I know I keep harping on this), Chris Kelly has the ability to unlock scoring ability in older players on the third line.  Look at the contributions Brian Rolston made to the Bruins after last years trade deadline.  He was nearly a point-per-game player, and proved to be one of the Bruin’s most consistent offensive forwards.

I think that acquiring Axelsson would be a fantastic move for the Bruins.  I remember when I used to go to games as a kid, my favorite players were Guerin, Axelsson, Stock and Samsonov.  This guy is one of my favorite Bruins of all time! He loves Boston, and Boston loves him.  He brings veteran leadership and grit to the locker room.  And he could also prove to put up some decent numbers on the Bruins third line.  I’m guessing that acquiring P.J. wouldn’t cost too much, seeing as he just wants to end his career in the NHL regardless of how much he might be making. It would be great to see Axelsson carry out and finish his hockey career with the B’s.   Chiarelli, get on it!

AFC South Predictions

Welcome back to the 4th and final AFC prediction post for 2012. Today we are going to exploring the AFC South, join me on a journey like no other.

Houston Texans (11-5) With the Texans coming off a great 2011 I feel they can only go up from here, with Matt Schaub coming off IR (injured reserve) and Arian Foster locked up the offense is going to fill in where the defense will lack from the depature of Mario Williams. Lets take a gander at their signings and their important games

Arian Foster (RB) re-signed (five-year extension (through 2016)).
Jon Weeks (C) re-signed (four-year extension (through 2015))
Chris Myers (C) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Ben Jones (C) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Keshawn Martin (WR) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Jared Crick (DE) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Randy Bullock (K) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Nick Mondek (T) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Whitney Mercilus (LB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (fifth-year option)).
Moran Norris (RB) signed/unrestricted free agent.
Quintin Demps (S) re-signed/unrestricted free agent.
Bradie James (LB) signed/unrestricted free agent.
Tim Dobbins (LB) re-signed/unrestricted free agent.
The Texans signed some decent players, that should help them win their division that was once ruled by the Colts. Here are the important games that the Texans will play week 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17
Week 3 is against the Broncos (Away)
Week 4 is against the Titans (Home)
Week 5 is against the Jets (Away)
Week 6 is against the Packers (Home)
Week 7 is against the Ravens (Home)
Week 9 is against the Bills (Home) This is sure to be a great game because Mario Williams is coming home with his new team
Week 10 is against the Bears (Away)
Week 12 is against the Lions (Away)
Week 13 is against the Titans (Away) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 14 is against the Patriots (Away)
Week 15 is against the Colts (Home)
Week 17 is against the Colts (Away) this is the second meeting between these two teams
The Texans have a pretty tough schedule this year but that's not going to push them from their ultimate goal.
The Houston Texans will win this division (my opinion)

Indianapolis Colts (9-7) The Colts and their fans believe they have the next Joe Montana in Andrew Luck but I beg to differ, he is a good QB but not a great one (once again my opinion). Andrew Luck has a while to go before he shines. Let's take a look at the Colts signings and their important games.
Reggie Wayne (WR) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (three-year contract (through 2014)).
Winston Justice (T) traded (for 6th-round pick in 2012).
Cory Redding (DE) signed/unrestricted free agent (three-year contract (through 2014)).
Tom Zbikowski (S) signed/unrestricted free agent (three-year contract (through 2014)).
Brandon McKinney (NT) signed/unrestricted free agent (two-year contract (through 2013)).
Tim Fugger (LB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
LaVon Brazill (WR) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Vick Ballard (RB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Chandler Harnish (QB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Justin Anderson (T) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)
Josh Chapman (NT) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
The Colts from what I can tell didn't really do much, except cut a lot of their core. Now let's take a look at their important games, week 1, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17
Week 1 is against the Bears (Away)
Week 5 is against the Packers (Home)
Week 6 is against the Jets (Away)
Week 8 is against the Titans (Away)
Week 11 is against the Patriots (Away)
Week 12 is against the Bills (Home)
Week 13 is against the Lions (Away)
Week 14 is against the Titans (Home) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 15 is against the Texans (Away)
Week 16 is against the Chiefs (Away)
Week 17 is against the Texans (Home) this is the second meeting between these two teams
When you look at it the Colts are kind of in a rebuilding phase, like I said earlier they cut a lot of their core that has brought them a Superbowl victory. One of the major cuts is Peyton Manning, I never thought I would see the day that Peyton wouldn't put on a Colts helmet.

Tennessee Titans (10-6) The Titans are also in a rebuilding phase,
here are the signings that the Titans have made.
Malcolm Sheppard (DT) re-signed/exclusive rights free agent.
Fernando Velasco (C) re-signed/exclusive rights free agent.
Jordan Babineaux (S) re-signed (two-year extension (through 2013)).
Patrick Bailey (LB) re-signed (multi-year contract)
Steve Hutchinson (G) signed (three-year contract (through 2014)).
Kamerion Wimbley (DE) signed (five-year contract (through 2016)).
Tim Shaw (LB) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (multi-year contract).
Leger Douzable (DT) signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Dave Ball (DE) re-signed/unrestricted free agent.
Coty Sensabaugh (CB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Mike Martin (DT) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Markelle Martin (S) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015))
Zach Brown (LB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Taylor Thompson (TE) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Scott Solomon (DE) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Michael Griffin (S) re-signed (five-year extension (through 2016)).
The Titans did a so/so job in the FA and draft signings, now let's look at the important games.
Week 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16
Week 1 is against the Patriots (Home)
Week 2 is against the Chargers (Away)
Week 3 is against the Lions (Home)
Week 4 is against the Texans (Away)
Week 6 is against the  Steelers (Home)
Week 7 is against the Bills (Away)
Week 8 is against the Colts (Home)
Week 9 is against the Bears (Home)
Week 13 is against the Texans (Home) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 14 is against the Colts (Away) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 15 is against the Jets (Home)
Week 16 is against the Packers (Away)
The Titans have a grueling schedule, especially right in the beginning. I see the Titans going 10-6 but with their schedule and witht the Texans in the same division, not more will happen.

Jacksonville Jaguars (7-9) The Jaguars are a train wreck right now and I don't see them getting back on track this year. Maurice Jones Drew, won't be enough to carry this team, and Chad Henne certainly isn't the QB answer. Let's take a look at the Jaguars off season signings.
Russell Allen (LB) re-signed/restricted free agent (three-year contract (through 2014)).
Dwight Lowery (S) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Jeremy Mincey (DE) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (four-year contract (though 2015)).
C.J. Mosley (DT) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (three-year contract (through 2014)).
Laurent Robinson (WR) signed/unrestricted free agent (five-year contract (through 2016)).
Chad Henne (QB) signed/unrestricted free agent (two-year contract (through 2013)).
Aaron Ross (CB) signed/unrestricted free agent (three-year contract (through 2014)).
Brock Bolen (RB) re-signed/exclusive rights free agent.
Zach Potter (TE) re-signed/exclusive rights free agent.
Courtney Greene (S) re-signed/restricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
William Middleton (CB) re-signed/restricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Lee Evans (WR) signed (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Andre Branch (DE) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Mike Harris (CB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015))
Jeris Pendleton (DT) signed/draft choice (four-year contract).
Brandon Marshall (LB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
The Jaguars did a pretty job sealing up some holes, but at the end of the day there is way more to be done.
Let's take a look their important games, nah forget about it, after their 2011 season they need any win they can get. I think the Jaguars will end up 7-9 and in last place.

“This Team Is Cursed”

Big Papi said it best as he limped off of the field shortly after an Adrian Gonzales 3 run homerun against the White Sox: “This team is cursed.”  Ortiz was simply jogging around the bases after the homerun and injured his right heel.  His heel swelled up and he exited the game shortly after the injury was sustained.  He did, however, receive positive results from Tuesday’s MRI, which showed that he does not have a tear or rupture.  Ortiz will be wearing a walking boot for the next week and will get a second opinion this week.  He could potentially spend some time on the DL, but as of right now he is just inactive.

This is kind of the worst time for the Sox to deal with this because they just got Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford back in the lineup.  Boston’s lone All-Star, Ortiz boasts a .316 average with 23 homers and 58 RBIs.  Add healthy Crawford and Ellsbury into the mix and there’s great potential for the Sox to have a much more successful second half of the season than their first.  Ortiz has been one of the most consistent offensive players in the Major Leagues this season, and it would be a terrible shame for the Red Sox to lose him for an extended period of time because of some freak injury.

Crawford (left) and Ellsbury (right).  Hopefully we see more of this
Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava will begin designated hitter duties for the Red Sox tonight against the White Sox.  I think I speak for all Boston fans when I say, “Get better soon Papi!”

Seriously though… I need him for my fantasy baseball team…

What’s With All of These Arrests…?

Wipe that goofy smile off of your face
Vikings superstar, Adrian Peterson, was released from jail on Saturday, July 7 on a $1,000 bond.  He was charged with a misdemeanor for resisting arrest at a nightclub in downtown Houston.  He allegedly engaged 3 off-duty police officers when they asked him to leave the club because it was closing.  Allegedly, Peterson “assumed an aggressive stance” and shoved officers at the nightclub.  The Texas native has always been perceived as humble, reserved, friendly and motivated.  This allegation certainly does not hold true to his personality.  The 27 year old went ahead and hired Rusty Hardin (the attorney who defended major league pitcher, Roger Clemens) to defend him in court.  The charge has been called a ‘total fabrication’ by the Peterson campaign.  He has pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment and continues to tell the media that he is in fact the victim.  Regardless, he is due in court on August 6th.

San Francisco native, Jason Kidd was also arrested this weekend for driving while intoxicated.  Last week many of the New York sports headlines read: “Jason Kidd Excited to Mentor Jeremy Lin…” Well, as of right now it’s looking like Jason Kidd could land himself in jail for a year and Jeremy Lin is probably heading to the Houston Rockets.  Police say Kidd crashed his Cadillac Escalade into a telephone pole in the Hamptons early Sunday morning.  Kidd was arraigned on a misdemeanor DWI charge and was released without bail.  Kidd pleaded not guilty and is awaiting further court proceedings.  The 10-time All-Star Kidd was ecstatic at the chance to mentor Jeremy Lin in New York with his 18 years of NBA experience.  He has had run-ins with the law before (in 2001 he was arrested for domestic violence) but at this point you’d expect more from a 39 year-old guy trying to be a ‘mentor’ right?

On Saturday night, 28-year-old Denver Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil was arrested for aggravated assault with a firearm.  His bond was set at $7,500 and he was released from jail early Sunday morning.  According to a victim’s statement, the victim drove his Mercedes in front of Dumervil’s Land Rover in stopped traffic.  Both parties became aggravated, made threats towards each other and honked their horns at each other.  Allegedly, Dumervil exited his vehicle and approached the Mercedes with his shirt lifted, revealing a firearm. Dumervil could face up to five years in prison if found guilty.  The first-team All-Pro signed a six-year, $61.5M contract extension in 2009, in which he recorded 17 sacks.  He missed the 2010 season, but came back strong last season with 9.5 sacks and 31 tackles.

Ok… so what’s the deal?  All of these crazy arrests of high-profile players all within about a week of each other have been a little tragic for the sports world.  Peterson and Kidd both act as role models by trying to be ambassadors for their respective games.  Dumervil has had other assault charges filed against him in the past, so that arrest is not so much of a shocker as the other two are.  Now, I guess what this really comes down to is the athlete’s “holier-than-thou” perspective towards everyone else.  They’re high-paid entertainers who are revered by millions of people who honestly can believe that they’re better people and deserve some sort of special treatment. I am going to guess that Peterson will be let off, but Kidd and Dumervil will both have to face the consequences of their actions facing jail time, fines and/or community service.

Either way, sports players should be smarter about what they do in public. C’mon guys, you’re role models for America.  Whether you like it or not, you are all held to a higher standard of conduct because you are all icons.  I don’t want to watch some Keeping Up with the Kardashians/Jersey Shore crap… I want to watch Sports Center.  Keep the cuffs off, focus on the game.  Watch what you do off the field/court so you can do your job.  Think and act with some accountability and responsibility. Your star-status can't get you out of everything.

AFC West Predictions

Welcome to the third installment of "Sports Blaggah's" NFL predictions. Today we are going to be looking into the AFC West

Denver Broncos (11-5) Now I know what you're thinking, 11-5 this year?? but they have Peyton Manning now. True but let's remember that this is just my predictions and Peyton hasn't played a actual game in a year. Let's take a look at the signings and some important games.

Mike Adams (S) signed/unrestricted free agent (two-year contract (through 2013)).
Lance Ball (RB) re-signed/exclusive rights free agent.
Peyton Manning (QB) signed (five-year contract (through 2016)).
Wesley Woodyard (LB) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (two-year contract (through 2013)).
Manny Ramirez (G) re-signed/unrestricted free agent.
Andre Caldwell (WR) signed/unrestricted free agent (two-year contract (through 2013)).
Tracy Porter (CB) signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Brandon Stokley (WR) signed (one-year contract (through 2012))
Omar Bolden (CB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)
Malik Jackson (DE) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Derek Wolfe (DT) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Danny Trevathan (LB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Philip Blake (C) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Matt Prater (K) re-signed (four-year contract (through 2015)).
John Elway has gone out of his way to get Peyton so I feel that might have hurt them from getting some better FA's but hell he is John Elway so let him do his thing. Here are some of the important games for the Broncos Week 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17
Week 1 is against the Steelers (Home)
Week 2 is against the Falcons (Away)
Week 3 is against the Texans (Home)
Week 4 is against the Raiders (Home)
Week 5 is against the Patriots (Away)
Week 6 is against the Chargers (Away)
Week 8 is against the Saints (Home)
Week 11 is against the Chargers (Home) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 12 is against the Chiefs (Away)
Week 14 is against the Raiders (Away) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 15 is against the Ravens (Away)
Week 17 is against the Chiefs (Home) this is the second meeting between these two teams
This year is going to be a true test for the Broncos, even with Peyton Manning joining the team. I feel that the Broncos have improved but at the end of the day Tebow isn't here to throw the "hail mary".

San Diego Chargers (12-4) The Chargers armed with Philip Rivers and a decent defense, the Chargers are setup to make a decent run this year. Lets take a look at their signings and important games.
Jared Gaither (T) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Jarret Johnson (LB) signed/unrestricted free agent (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Kory Sperry (TE) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Le'Ron McClain (RB) signed/unrestricted free agent (three-year contract (through 2014)).
Eddie Royal (WR) signed/unrestricted free agent (three-year contract).
Roscoe Parrish (WR) signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012))
Luis Castillo (DE) signed (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Micheal Spurlock (WR) signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Melvin Ingram (LB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (fifth year option)).
Kendall Reyes (DE) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
David Molk (C) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Ladarius Green (TE) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Johnnie Troutman (G) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Edwin Baker (RB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Garrett Brown (DT) signed (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Arthur Hobbs (CB) signed (three-year contract (through 2014)).
Brandon Taylor (S) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Ronnie Brown (RB) signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
LaDainian Tomlinson (RB) retired.
The Chargers seem to have all of their needs filled, and a legend called it quits. I am glad that LaDainian Tomlinson went out the same way he came in, classy.
Let's now take a look at the important games, week 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17
Week 1 is against the Raiders (Away)
Week 3 is against the Falcons (Home)
Week 4 is against the Chiefs (Away)
Week 5 is against the Saints (Away)
Week 6 is against the Broncos (Home)
Week 9 is against the Chiefs (Home) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 11 is against the Broncos (Away) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 12 is against the Ravens (Home)
Week 13 is against the Bengals (Home)
Week 14 is against the Steelers (Away)
Week 16 is against the Jets (Away)
Week 17 is against the Raiders (Home) This is the second meeting between these two teams
The Chargers are what I like to call "the comeback kings" every year they seem to be so far out but yet always find their way back into the playoff race. This year shouldn't be any different, I see them moving past the Broncos to win the division.

Oakland Raiders (8-8) Let me start off by saying that the Raiders had a pretty decent 2011 (for the Raiders that is) with a veteran and ex NE Patriot Richard Seymour, and veteran Carson Palmer leading the way I think the Raiders will stay .500 for most (if not all) this season. Let's take a look at their signings and their important games
Ron Bartell (CB) signed (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Mike Brisiel (G) signed/unrestricted free agent (five-year contract (through 2016)).
Khalif Barnes (T) re-signed/unrestricted free agent.
Pat Lee (CB) signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Dave Tollefson (DE) signed/unrestricted free agent (two-year contract (through 2013)).
Matt Leinart (QB) signed.
Tyvon Branch (S) re-signed/franchise (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Desmond Bryant (DT) re-signed/restricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Jack Crawford (DE) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Christo Bilukidi (DT) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Nate Stupar (LB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Miles Burris (LB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Tyvon Branch (S) re-signed (four-year extension (through 2015)).
Raiders coasted through FA and the Draft so it's tough to really pinpoint their grade on it.
Here are the Raiders important games,week 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17.
Week 1 is against the Chargers (Home)
Week 3 is against the Steelers (Home)
Week 4 is against the Broncos (Away)
Week 6 is against the Falcons (Away)
Week 8 is against the Chiefs (Away)
Week 10 is against the Ravens (Away)
Week 11 is against the Saints (Home)
Week 12 is against the Bengals (Away) This is going to be a very important game for Carson Palmer, as he will be able to get his sweet revenge against his old team.
Week 14 is against the Broncos (Home) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 15 is against the Chiefs (Home) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 17 is against the Chargers (Away) this is the second meeting between these two teams
I have always felt that going to Oakland was a place where the NFL player dies (career wise) but they have seem to actual make themselves into a little force out there in Oakland. Look for the Raiders to make a legit playoff run in the coming years but not this year, as they are still in the "rebuilding" phase.

Kansas City Chiefs (10-6) With a defensive minded coach, Romeo Crennel is sure to whip the Chiefs into form. He defiantly has all the right pieces to succeed (unlike in Cleveland). Let's take a look at the signings and important games shall we?
Stanford Routt (CB) signed (three-year contract (through 2014)).
Amon Gordon (DT) re-signed (two-year extension (through 2013)).
Peyton Hillis (RB) signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Kevin Boss (TE) signed/unrestricted free agent (three-year contract (through 2014)).
Eric Winston (T) signed (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Brady Quinn (QB) signed/unrestricted free agent.
Jovan Belcher (LB) re-signed/restricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Travis Daniels (CB) re-signed/unrestricted free agent.
Jerome Long (DE) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Junior Hemingway (WR) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Cyrus Gray (RB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Devon Wylie (WR) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Jeff Allen (G) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
De'Quan Menzie (CB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Dominique Ellis (S) signed.
Rich Ranglin (G) signed.
Martin Rucker (TE) signed/unrestricted free agent.
Leon Williams (LB) signed/unrestricted free agent.
Donald Stephenson (T) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015))
I feel the Chiefs did an excellent job filling their holes, now it's time for the important games
week 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 17
Week 1 is against the Falcons (Home)
Week 2 is against the Bills (Away)
Week 3 is against the Saints (Away)
Week 4 is against the Chargers (Home)
Week 5 is against the Ravens (Home)
Week 8 is against the Raiders (Home)
Week 9 is against the Chargers (Away) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 10 is against the Steelers (Away)
Week 11 is against the Bengals (Home)
Week 12 is against the Broncos (Home)
Week 15 is against the Raiders (Away) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 17 is against the Broncos (Away) this is the second meeting between these two teams.
The Chiefs have a decent shot at the division this year but between the Broncos, and the Chargers both improving they will most likely fall short.

Youk vs. Ray… Letters to Boston Faceoff

Both Ray Allen and Kevin Youkilis were Boston sports icons for the last several years.  Youkilis spent about 8 and a half years with the Boston Red Sox while Ray Allen spent 5 years with the Boston Celtics. As I’m sure most of you know, neither Youk nor Ray are with their former Boston organizations anymore.  Ray went to the Miami Heat (still not entirely forgiven) and Youkilis was traded to the Chicago White Sox.  Both players wrote letters to their respective Boston fan-bases.  I just wanted to take a moment to share these letters with you guys and see what you think.

I’ll start with Ray’s because it’s… well quite brief:
Keepin' it brief

“Dear Celtics Fans,

For the past five years, my family and I took great pride in calling Boston Home.  We have loved living in this city, being members of the Celtics family and being part of your community.  These memories will be cherished forever.

From my heart, THANK YOU Boston for this incredible Journey.

Ray Allen #20”

Is this kind of half-hearted or is it just me?  Nowhere does he take time to talk about the Boston Celtics fan base or the organization.  Just ‘Ray Allen #20.’  Yeah I’m still mad that he signed with the Heat but this is pretty lame… isn’t it?

To put things into perspective, let me show you the final paragraph of Youkilis’ page-long letter to the Red Sox organization and Red Sox Nation.  Keep in mind; this is after several thank you paragraphs and well wishes.

“And, last but no means least, to all the Red Sox Nation, the home of the most dedicated and knowledgeable fans in baseball, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.  That final game at Fenway was the most emotional day of my life on the baseball field.  It could not have been scripted any better.  And to all those kids out there in Red Sox Nation, I can give you my Dad’s advice.  ‘Life is like a throw to first base, always aim high.’

I love you all, and thanks,

Kevin Youkilis”

His last game at Fenway
Man what a classy way to address the fans and the city of Boston.  I won’t lie; I had never been a tremendous Youk fan.  But I gained so much respect for this guy and wish him all the best.  The guy is a class act.  His last paragraph was longer than Ray Allen’s entire ‘letter’ to Boston!  And as you read the letter from Youk, you can just tell how much heart he poured into it.  Seriously, kudos to Youk for being extremely classy towards the city of Boston despite all of the problems he had with Bobby V and the organization in his last year. He was one of the Red Sox most scrutinized players this year and you can see that he still had his heart in Boston.  If you want to read the full letter, and I highly recommend you do, click here.

So Ray vs. Youk… I think Youk wins by unanimous decision with a TKO.  I really thought Ray loved playing in Boston but with all of the recent events and this letter, I’m beginning to doubt that.  I’m sure he enjoyed it, but I’m just seeing a lack of heart right now.  Am I being too critical on Ray?  Perhaps.  But when you compare these two guys and how much they loved playing for their city, Youk takes it no questions asked.

I mean… how can you not love this city?

AFC North Predictions

Welcome back for my second installment of "Sports Blaggah's" NFL predictions 2012
In this segment I am going to exploring the AFC North

Cincinnati Bengals (11-5) The Bengals had a great 2011 season, all with a rookie QB Andy Dalton. With Marvin Lewis at the helm the Bengals have gotten better and better. Lets take a look at the newest members of the Bengals and some important games.

Reggie Nelson (S) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Jason Allen (CB) signed/unrestricted free agent.
BenJarvus Green-Ellis (RB) signed/unrestricted
Adam Jones (CB) re-signed/unrestricted free agent.
Manny Lawson (LB) re-signed/unrestricted free agent.
The Bengals don't seem to have made a big splash in FA (free agency) but they have a solid young core that will make them contenders for a while. Now lets take a gander at the important games. Week 1, 7, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17
Week 1 is against the Ravens (Away)
Week 7 is against the Steelers (Home)
Week 9 is against the Broncos (Home)
Week 10 is against the (Home)
Week 15 is against the Eagles (Away)
Week 16 is against the Steelers (Away) this is the second meeting between these two teams
Week 17 is against the Ravens (Home) this is the second meeting between these two teams
In all honesty I think the Bengals have a pretty good shot this year, however being in a division with the Ravens and Steelers will prove to be difficult

Baltimore Ravens (12-4) The Baltimore Ravens are always a team that is mentioned in the same sentence as the Superbowl. With veteran leaders like Ray Lewis (mister Raven) and loud mouth Terrell Suggs the Ravens are always a team with attitude and poise. Let's take a look at some of the FA signings and important games.
Curtis Painter (QB) signed (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Asa Jackson (CB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Jacoby Jones (WR) signed (two-year contract (through 2013)).
Bernard Pollard (S) re-signed (three-year extension (through 2015)).
Christian Thompson (S) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Kelechi Osemele (G) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Gino Gradkowski (G) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
DeAngelo Tyson (DE) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Courtney Upshaw (LB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Tommy Streeter (WR) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Bernard Pierce (RB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
The Ravens did a great job getting all their draft picks signed, but didn't really make a name for themselves in FA. That's ok they still have Ray Rice and *cough cough* Joe Flacco.
Here are the important games this year,Week 1, 2, 3, 7, 11, 13, 15, 16, 17
Week 1 is against the Bengals (Home)
Week 2 is against the Eagles (Away)
Week 3 is against the Patriots (Home) (AFC Championship reunion)
Week 7 is against the Texans (Away)
Week 11 is against the Steelers (Away)
Week 13 is against the Steelers (Home) this is the second meeting between these two teams and I'm sure the tempers will be flaring.
Week 15 is against the Broncos (Home)
Week 16 is against the Giants (Home)
Week 17 is against the Bengals (Away) this is the second meeting between these two teams.
All in all I think its going to be a tough division this year for the Ravens, however I feel that the Ravens will come in second place and loose a tough one against the Steelers.

Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) The Pittsburgh Steelers are the cream of the crop in this division (remember my opinion) with a very solid coach in Mike Tomlin. The Steelers defense has to be one of the top out there. I am not a James Harrison fab what so ever but I have to give him a tad bit of credit for being a force. Let's take a look at the Steelers signings and important games. Doug Legursky (G) re-signed/restricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Trai Essex (G) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Jerricho Cotchery (WR) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (two-year contract (through 2013)).
David Johnson (TE) re-signed/restricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Keenan Lewis (CB) re-signed/restricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Ryan Mundy (S) re-signed/restricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Steve McLendon (NT) re-signed/exclusive rights free agent.
Jeremy Kapinos (P) re-signed/exclusive rights free agent.
Isaac Redman (RB) re-signed/exclusive rights free agent.
Chris Rainey (RB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Alameda Ta'amu (NT) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Toney Clemons (WR) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Terrence Frederick (CB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
David Paulson (TE) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Mike Adams (T) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015))
One very important contract that I didn't list is the original running QB Mr Kordell Stewart. He signed a one day contract and retired. Here are the important games, week 1, 2, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 16
Week 1 is against the Broncos (Away)
Week 2 is against the Jets (Home)
Week 5 is against the Eagles (Home)
Week 7 is against the Bengals (Away)
Week 9 is against the Giants (Away)
Week 11 is against the Ravens (Home)
Week 13 is against the Ravens (Away) like I said earlier in my post, this is sure to be a sloberknocker
Week 16 is against the Bengals (Home) this is the second meeting between these two teams
My true thought is that the Steelers will win the division, even with the Bengals improving and the Ravens being a pest.

Cleveland Browns (8-8) Boy oh boy, what can I say about the Browns that hasn't already been said. Do I think they will be a contender? I have to be honest and say no, so let's take a look at the signings and important games for the Browns shall we?
Frostee Rucker (DE) signed/unrestricted free agent (five-year contract (through 2016)).
Oniel Cousins (T) re-signed/unrestricted free agent.
Juqua Parker (DE) signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Dimitri Patterson (CB) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (three-year contract (through 2014)).
Alex Smith (TE) re-signed/unrestricted free agent (one-year contract).
Phil Dawson (K) re-signed/franchise (one-year contract (through 2012)).
Jordan Norwood (WR) re-signed/exclusive rights free agent.
James-Michael Johnson (LB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Brad Smelley (RB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Travis Benjamin (WR) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Ryan Miller (G) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
Trevin Wade (CB) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).
John Hughes (DT) signed/draft choice (four-year contract (through 2015)).

So there you have it! there are all of your important signings, nothing crazy but not bad.
Here are the important games .... AH! the heck with it! all the games are important to the Browns this year. 8-8 is my opinion for them this year. (Good Luck).
